Neighborhood Spotlight: Oakhurst, Fort Worth

A Neighborhood Spotlight on Oakhurst, a tree-lined Fort Worth neighborhood centered around Oakhurst Park, known for its walkable streets, close-knit community, and everyday life shaped by the people who call it home.

Sign for Oakhurst Park, a central gathering place that hosts community events and holiday celebrations in the Oakhurst neighborhood of Fort Worth, Texas.

A home search is personal by nature, shaped as much by place as by the house itself. The Neighborhood Spotlight series explores Fort Worth and DFW neighborhoods through lived experience – architecture, local character, and the details that shape daily life – informed by the people who live there and the homes they inhabit. Each feature considers what gives a neighborhood its distinct feel, and how that collective identity carries into life at home.

A few years ago, when I was driving around Fort Worth doing recon for an out-of-town client, I stumbled upon Oakhurst: an aptly-named neighborhood of charming homes built around Oakhurst Park, featuring giant oak trees lining flower-named streets (Daisy, Honeysuckle, Marigold, Bluebonnet…you get the idea).

Oakhurst is conveniently located in east Fort Worth, near downtown, with highway access to DFW, AT&T Stadium, and Globe Life Field. Without traffic, you can get to downtown Dallas in less than 40 minutes. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with a long-time Oakhurst resident to talk about her family’s experience living in the close-knit community in Fort Worth.

How would you describe Oakhurst, and what do you enjoy about living in this east Fort Worth neighborhood?

The vintage houses under the canopy of old trees, walkable streets, friendly neighbors, a diverse community. It has a small town feel that’s both welcoming and quiet (as much as any community near downtown can be!)

Describe what a typical weekend might look like for someone living in Oakhurst.

Everyday, you will see people walking at all times. From families with strollers, babies, and dogs, to people using walkers and canes. The small neighborhood is anchored in the center by Oakhurst Park — a triangle of green with a new playground and basketball court. FOOP (Friends of Oakhurst Park) is active in not only keeping the park beautiful and safe, but in sponsoring several events throughout the year. Neighbors put together block activities, like “Oaktoberfest,” book clubs and kickball teams. Halloween is a wonderful time to be in the neighborhood. This year, I shut down at 8:30 after running out of over 300 pieces of candy (limited to one per trick-or-treater!) In the summer, we have a fun Fourth of July celebration with a parade and games, and we also host occasional food truck events throughout the year.

What are your favorite local restaurants?

My faves are Sikay, El Puerto, Mamma Mia, El Meson Chapin, and Pho Nam. I also want to give a shoutout to Tributary — we loved going there before it closed!
